In the bustling heart of Toronto, international students and newcomer youth often face barriers to accessing climate education. The Fellowship addressed these barriers through a powerful blend of climate education, professional development, and community building.

In Regina, SK, high school students gathered for a youth roundtable to discuss the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). They demonstrated a deep understanding of policy and a desire for meaningful participation.

From a high school club to a national movement.

2016-2017: A Movement Starts
  • Founded after Abhay travels to the Arctic and connects with Inuit youth.
  • Begins as a high school club in Delta, BC to personify climate change.
  • Regular video calls between BC and Inuvik students to share stories.
2017-2019: Global Storytelling
  • Expands to Bolivia, Taiwan, Siberia, India, and Chile.
  • Cape Town youth produce video on water crisis through BTD dialogue.
  • Mental health events strengthen school community engagement in BC.
2019-2022: Mental Health Focus
  • Refocuses on Canadian programming to improve sustainability.
  • Emerging research highlights mental health impacts of climate change.
  • Tariq Harney joins to support national volunteer team.
2022-2023: Operations & Structure
  • Secures first grant funding from FES to hire staff.
  • Formalizes climate mental health focus with evidence-informed frameworks.
  • Creates new facilitation guides and youth-centred materials.
2024: National Programming
  • Major grant projects launch with Walking Softer and Lawson Foundation.
  • CECP delivers programming in 14 high schools across Canada.
  • Toronto fellowship supports immigrant youth capacity building.
2025: Scaling In-Person
  • Responds to requests for more in-person programming.
  • Partnership with David Suzuki Foundation for youth dialogues.
  • Pilots classroom Education Program in Regina grade 7 & 8 classrooms.
